Piston rings seal the space between the piston and the cylinder wall: the compression rings keep the combustion pressure above the piston, while the oil control ring keeps the lubricating oil below. If the rings wear out, you will notice blue smoke from the exhaust, increased oil consumption, blow-by into the crankcase (excess pressure at the breather), and declining compression. The classic test: measure the compression, inject a little oil into the cylinder, and measure again — if the value rises significantly, the piston rings are worn.
We supply complete piston ring sets (per cylinder) for common small marine diesels: Solé Diesel (Mini 11 to Mini 55), Vetus (M2.06 to M4.17, M3.10, M4.14), Meiki, Beta Marine (Beta 10 to Beta 60, Phasor K2-4.5), Nanni (N2.10 to N4.80), Universal (M-25XPB, M-35B), Craftsman Marine, and JF Marine Power. For engines available in multiple versions, please note the difference between direct and indirect injection — the sets are not interchangeable.
Never install new rings in a worn cylinder without honing the wall, and always check the end gap in the cylinder bore. If the cylinder wall is damaged or the bore is out-of-round, check our cylinder liners and pistons. For a complete overhaul in a single order, see the engine overhaul kits.
