The oil pump keeps the lubricating oil under pressure circulating through bearings, crankshaft, and cylinder head. If the oil pressure drops — a flickering oil pressure light when idling warm is the classic first sign — the pump may not immediately be to blame. First check the oil level, the filter, and the oil pressure switch, and measure the pressure with an external pressure gauge. If the pressure remains too low, the oil pump is worn or the problem lies with worn-in bearings.
A worn oil pump is especially noticeable with warm, thin oil: the clearance between the gears and the pump housing becomes too large to build up pressure. Do not wait too long to replace it — boating with excessively low oil pressure will destroy the main and conrod bearings in no time, leading to a complete overhaul.

When installing, also replace the oil filter and refresh the oil. If the oil pressure was too low for a longer period, immediately check the main and conrod bearings.
