The head gasket seals the combustion chambers, oil channels, and cooling water channels between the engine block and the cylinder head. If it fails, you will notice white smoke from the exhaust, coolant loss without visible leakage, oil in the coolant (mayonnaise under the filler cap), bubbles in the expansion tank, or an engine that quickly overheats. In a marine diesel, overheating — for example due to a worn impeller or a clogged raw water intake — is by far the most common cause of head gasket failure.
