Cylinder head bolts provide the clamping force required by the head gasket to reliably seal the compression and cooling water channels. Modern head bolts are stretch bolts: during installation, they are deliberately tightened into the elastic range and are therefore intended for single use only. Reusing old bolts risks uneven clamping force — and with it, precisely the head gasket failure that the overhaul was meant to resolve.
Therefore, always replace the head bolts whenever the cylinder head has been disassembled, along with a new head gasket. During installation, adhere to the specified tightening torque and tightening sequence (usually in multiple steps, concluding with an angle rotation) and use a calibrated torque wrench.
