The connecting rod connects the piston to the crankshaft and converts combustion pressure into rotary motion. In principle, a connecting rod lasts the lifetime of an engine — unless something goes wrong. The most notorious cause in marine engines is hydraulic lock (water slugging): raw water entering a cylinder via the exhaust or air filter, causing the piston to hit an incompressible column of water and bending the connecting rod. A seized connecting rod bearing due to oil starvation also usually means replacement.
You will notice a bent connecting rod by vibrations, uneven compression between the cylinders, and one-sided wear on the piston and cylinder wall. Always check a suspect rod for straightness and twisting, and replace it if in doubt — the consequential damage of a failing connecting rod is catastrophic.
We supply connecting rods for common small marine diesels: Vetus (M2.06 to M4.17, M4.14), Solé Diesel (Mini 11 to Mini 55), Beta Marine (Beta 10 to Beta 60), Nanni (N2.10 to N4.50), Universal (M-25XPB, M-35B), Craftsman Marine, and JF Marine Power. Each product page shows which engine codes are compatible.
When replacing, always install new connecting rod bolts and new connecting rod bearings, and check the corresponding piston for cracks and piston pin play.
