Connecting rod bolts

Connecting rod bolts clamp the bearing cap to the connecting rod and are among the most heavily stressed bolts in the engine: with every power stroke, they pull the complete connecting rod foot tightly around the crankshaft journal. They are stretch bolts that are tightened into the elastic range during assembly — making them single-use only. A reused connecting rod bolt can break under load, and a loose connecting rod generally punches right through the engine block. Given the price of a new set of bolts, that risk is never justifiable.

Therefore, always replace the connecting rod bolts during any overhaul and whenever the connecting rod bearings are replaced. Tighten them according to factory specifications: usually in torque steps, sometimes concluding with an angle turn, and always with lightly oiled threads unless prescribed otherwise.
