The glow plug relay switches the current to the glow plugs during preheating and—acting as a start-stop timer—often controls the engine’s stop solenoid as well. If the glow plugs no longer receive power, an indirect-injection marine diesel will start poorly or not at all in cold weather, even if the plugs themselves are in good condition. Therefore, do not immediately replace the glow plugs: first measure whether there is voltage at the plugs during preheating. If you do not hear the relay click when turning on the ignition, the relay or wiring is at fault.
A defective relay can also fail in the exact opposite way: contact points that fuse together keep the glow plugs continuously energized, causing them to burn out and draining the battery. A warm glow plug fuse or a glowing glow indicator after starting are telltale signs.
