The alternator recharges the starter and service batteries while engine is running. Does the charge indicator light up, does the battery voltage remain below 13 volts, or do you smell burning near the engine? This usually means the carbon brushes, voltage regulator, or diode bridge are worn out. Bearings also wear down: a squealing or rattling alternator often announces itself weeks in advance. In a humid, salty engine room, an alternator simply does not last as long as in a car.
At Parts4Boats you will find new alternators for virtually all common marine diesels: Volvo Penta (MD series, MD2010 to MD2040, D1 and D2), Yanmar (1GM10 to 4JH), Vetus (M and D series), Solé Diesel Mini, Nanni, Beta Marine, Bukh, Westerbeke, Crusader, and Lombardini Marine. Output ranges from 40A for small single-cylinder engines to 175A for engines with a large battery bank. When ordering, pay attention to the amperage, direction of rotation, type of pulley (V-belt or multi-ribbed belt), and the OE numbers in the product description.
Is the battery not charging and is the alternator in order? Then also check the V-belt tension and ground connections. If your engine is also experiencing starting problems, take a look at our starter motors. Are you unsure which alternator fits your engine? Send us the engine model or the part number from the old alternator and we will figure it out for you.
