Onboard electrical systems have a much harder life than in any car: a damp, salty engine compartment is the perfect recipe for corroded contacts, stuck carbon brushes, and burnt-out windings. Starting problems on the water are therefore rarely the fault of the engine itself — usually, it’s the electrical system.

Troubleshooting tip: before replacing a starter motor or alternator, always check the battery voltage, earth connections, and cable lugs first. A heavily corroded cable lug causes the exact same symptoms as a faulty starter motor — but fixing it is free.
