Overheating is the number one cause of death among marine engines. While a car relies on airflow, your inboard engine depends on raw water and a closed cooling circuit — and every component in that chain is a potential weak point: a clogged raw water intake, a worn impeller, a sticking thermostat, or a leaking circulating pump. Keeping your cooling system in order prevents the most expensive repairs: head gasket failure and a warped cylinder head.

Is your engine running too hot? Systematically check the chain: first the raw water side (intake, sea strainer, impeller, heat exchanger), then the internal side (thermostat, circulating pump, coolant level). If the engine has already overheated, also check the head gasket — white smoke or oil in the coolant tells you all you need to know.
